Unlike his close friend and teammate Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle is not about to announce his retirement from international cricket just yet.

Gayle, 42, had a disappointing run at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the defending champions the West Indies were eliminated from the tournament at the Super 12 Stage.

"I'd love to play one more World Cup, but I don't think they will allow me," he said before bursting into that trademark laughter of his.

Moments before the Caribbean side played Australia in their final Group A match, Bravo, 36, declared that this will be his last game in the maroon colours of the West Indies.

However, Gayle, who shares a special record with Bravo for the longest career in T20 cricket, is hoping for one final hurrah before bidding adieu to his legions of global followers around the world.

"It's been a phenomenal career. I didn't announce any retirement, but they actually give me one game in Jamaica to go in front of my home crowd," said the left-hander who holds the record for most T20 runs, 14,321.

"Then I can say, 'Hey guys, thank you so much.' Let's see. If not, I'll announce it... and then I'll be joining DJ Bravo and say thanks to each and every one. But I can't say that as yet."

The self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’ may very well get his wish with Ireland set to tour the West Indies in January. Jamaica, pending approval from the government, will host the three T20s and three ODIs at Sabina Park where Gayle, if chosen by the selectors, could play his swansong.

It is a strong possibility that the Roger Harper-led selection panel could select Gayle, who has had a glittering 22-year cricketing career, for the series against the Irish.

Marketing the upcoming event around the man who has the record for the most sixes (553) in T20 cricket, is likely to lure fans into the famed cricket stadium in Kingston, providing well needed revenue into the coffers of the Jamaica Cricket Association given the impact of the coronavirus pandemic which has impacted its ability to hosts matches.
