Police call special security meeting with Old Harbour business community
This will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Orion Plaza on South Street, Old Harbour.
Meeting starts at 6:00 pm sharp.
In recent weeks, particularly in this parish, there has been a noticeably rise in high stakes robbery targeting businesses handling large sums of cash.
In response to this growing threat, the police have embarked on a series of meetings within the division with business operators, primarily financial institutions such as banks, cambios, remittance services and couriers.
Wednesday’s upcoming meeting in Old Harbour with stakeholders is a continuation of similar engagements within the municipality of Portmore, said SSP Christopher Phillips, commander in charge of St Catherine South Police Division.
“It is really to look at the threats against businesses since of late in particular financial establishments,” SSP Phillips explained to Old Harbour News.
“To share insights on the emerging criminal threats against businesses and to share meaningful security measures and tips.
“It also will be a platform for promoting the business watch programme.”
On April 15, four armed men stormed Bud’s Gas Station at Gutters, as the owner was in the process of opening the business, and made off with a reported $24 million dollars.
Two days before that early morning heist at Gutters, gunmen also made off with $8 million from a remittance outlet in Mandeville, Manchester which follows two brazen ambushes within the spate of a month on Beryllium security guards in Portmore where more than $30 million combined were stolen.
