Earlier this week, local engineering firm Contraxx Enterprises Limited allowed motorists access to the new and improved structure now comprising of dual lanes and sidewalks for pedestrians.

The reconstruction forms part of a JMD$248 million expansion of the Big Pond/Myton Gully drainage improvement project funded by the World Bank at a cost of US$8 million.

This amount represents phase one of expansion works encompassing an area between Claremont Housing Scheme and the Myton Gully bridge east of the Old Harbour town centre.

Arguably the most challenging aspect of this 12-month contract of the first phase, the contractor will shift its primary focus towards widening the earth drain north of the bridge.

When complete the realignment of the channel will have the capacity to retain the highest average amount of rainfall recorded in the last century.

Whilst no timeline has been announced for the start of the next phase, phase two of the project will see further realignment and expansion of the gully from the bridge all the way down to Frazer’s Gully in Old Harbour Bay.

The final phase will then be executed from Claremont to Big Pond.

A natural sinkhole of nature, Big Pond is a major flood prone area in northern Old Harbour particularly during the rainy season.
