Local business group, the South St Catherine Chamber of Commerce (SSCCC), has issued a statement condemning the recent spate of murders in Old Harbour.

Between August 11 and August 18 three murders were recorded in the southwest St Catherine region heightening fears among residents and the business community.

Two of the three killings occurred 15 hours apart within the same day, one involving Clifford Edwards, a retired army man of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). Of also concern is that sandwiching the murder of Edwards, was the brazen shooting deaths in the town centre, the commercial hub of the community.

Expressing sadness and sympathies towards those directly affected by the homicides, the local chamber of commerce stated: “In recent weeks, our community has experienced incidents of violence that have shocked and saddened us all. These senseless acts have no place in our vibrant and closely knit community. As business owners, citizens, and neighbors, we must come together to condemn such barbarous acts of crime and violence.”

The statement issued under the signature of its president Treacha Reid “strongly urge our community members to stand united during these trying times”.

She added: “We must demonstrate resilience and determination as we face these challenges head-on. It is essential that we work collaboratively to ensure the safety and well-being of every member of our community.

“Our businesses play a vital role in shaping the fabric of our community and by fostering an environment of unity, support, and collaboration, we can actively contribute to the healing process and help prevent further incidents. Let us not allow fear to overshadow our shared values of compassion, cooperation, and progress.

“The South St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce is committed to working alongside local authorities, community leaders and citizens to address these issues and promote a safer environment for all. We call upon each and every member of our community to be vigilant, report any suspicious activity and support our law enforcement officers in their efforts to maintain peace and security.

“In the face of adversity we must remember that our strength lies in our unity. Let us join hands, support one another, and reaffirm our dedication to preserving the safety, harmony and prosperity of our beloved community.”
