The police have positively identified a man who was fatally shot during an alleged shootout yesterday near the Lloyd’s Pen/Salt Gully border region in the Old Harbour Police Zone.
Dead is 21-year-old labourer Lushane Barnes otherwise called ‘Rat Face’ of Job Lane, Spanish Town.
Barnes was pronounced dead at hospital following what the police say was a gun battle after a vehicle he was driving refused to obey the signal of a police unit on patrol.
A woman who was also in the vehicle with Barnes remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
A .45 pistol and 120 9mm rounds of ammunition were recovered after the shooting, report the police.
Investigators are yet to determine Barnes’ mission to be in that area at the time, but it is believed he either had or was about to transact business in the underworld of the illegal gun trade.
The now deceased was no stranger either to law enforcers after he was arrested and charged in December 2020.
With regards to that matter, Barnes was charged by the Westmoreland police after he was found with stolen items in relation to a robbery in the parish on December 7, 2020.
Prior to his apprehension and subsequent charge, Barnes was reportedly accused of kidnaping, impersonating police, illegal possession of a firearm and robbery with aggravation.
A police report at the time stated that Barnes and two other men went to a home in Barrett Lane, Negril claiming to be police officers before proceeding to rob the occupants of a Toyota Axio motor car valued $1.8 million and several electronic items worth more than $500,000.
