Concerns raised over police arrest of Old Harbour Bay businessman

Forty-eight year-old Kevin Bent, more popularly known as ‘Kevn Square’, was taken into custody following a special police operation by officers from the St Catherine South Police Division headquarters.

According the preliminary reports about 1:00 pm on March 1, Bent was travelling along Darlington Drive in a Honda CRV when officers swooped down on him and conducted a search of the vehicle.

During the search officers say they recovered a 9mm pistol with a magazine containing nine 9mm rounds.

Bent, who operates a shop in the community and is a member of the fishing industry, was then taken into custody where he was formally charged in the presence of his attorney Donahue Martin Jr.

However, relatives are questioning the true motive of the officers, claiming he’s being targeted and that the gun was planted.

“Di police dem hold him up a Old Harbour town and den bring come dung a di family yard dung yah so a [Old Harbour] Bay. Dem run out all a wi out of the house and bring him upstairs. And then after dem have him upstairs dem come back dung wid him and se dem find gun in a di house under mattress. Kevin no live yah so and a set dem a set him up,” said a relative who asked requested that we kept her identity anonymous.

Relatives have shared videos of the police team with Bent at the yard in Old Harbour Bay, as they angrily protested the actions of the officers.

In several amateur videos seen by Old Harbour News, police officers were seen standing guard outside the two-storey house before another set of cops emerged from the building with Bent in handcuffs.

Bent was then placed in an unmarked police car before being whisked away to the ‘Hundred Man’ police lockup in Portmore.

A court date is now being finalized for him to answer to charges of prohibition of an offensive weapon and ammunition.

Investigation is ongoing.
