More children benefit from US-based Jamaican promoter’s back-to-school treat

Over 50 school bags packed with books, pencils, pens, rulers and other items were distributed by Cardoza at the Nightingale Grove playfield on Emancipation Day. It’s the largest amount of children to benefit from Cordoza’s annual benevolence since he started doing so more than a decade ago.

The entire day was a treat for the kids and adults alike, with six teams participating in a six-a-side football tournament comprising of sides from Spanish Town, Old Harbour and Gutters.

In addition to receiving back-to-school packages, there were a few giveaways such as slippers, sneakers and t-shirts to the children.

“The plan is to give away 100 school bags next year,” the Queens, New York resident told Old Harbour News.

Team Claudia, sponsored by local party promoter Claudia Deacon of Marlie Acres, won the football tournament, which earned them $12,000 and an Adidas football.

And to add extra spice to the day, party promoters from Spanish Town once again faceoff with their counterparts from Old Harbour. The exciting battle ended 1-1.

The Spanish Town promoters team had the likes of Ras Greg, Chub Roc, Troy Tine, Chucko Advance and Cheddy Clean Game, while the Old Harbour aggregation included Gaps 7G, Blingaz Blackout Boss, Animal, Taxi Rave, Conrod Parkes and Absolute Crave.

Similarly there was also a netball contest between both towns, which Spanish Town ladies won. Their victory was led by Tobian Howard, Ceecee, Sami Gotti, Lisa Sassyqueen, Michi Unruly and Shan Skyies, while the team of Sasha Libra Queen, Nicky World Cup, Shan Hillrock, Ava Diva and Terry Hottaz represented Old Harbour well despite defeat. 

Cardoza, who is the promoter of the popular Gaps CleanStamp party edition series here in Old Harbour, has been hosting a back-to-school treat for his community for the last 13 years.
