Dr. Kurt Waul plans to return South West St. Catherine to the PNP
Waul hails from a family tradition of public service. His father, Carlos Waul, served as councillor of the Church Pen Division in the same constituency and also competed as an independent candidate in the by-election of 2011 against incumbent Everald Warmington.
The doctor picks up the mantle where his father left off, focusing on delivering public service in the interest of helping others improve their lives and building an equitable society.
Dr. Waul believes that his commitment to the greater good is what separates him from the opposition. “I believe in service, it’s my life’s practice, I do this every day in my work. I am a son of this constituency. Born and raised in Old Harbour Bay, I attended Marlie Mount Primary and St. Jago High School and then on to the UWI to attend medical school. In spite of more lucrative opportunities, I decided to establish my medical practice to serve St. Catherine. This community raised me with love and compassion and I intend to help it rise to its full potential,” he said.
St. Catherine South West has the fifth largest electorate in the country. Its population has nearly doubled with the rise in new housing scheme developments over the last 10 years. However, under the current MP, population growth has not been matched with expanding social or health services, infrastructure and jobs, especially for the younger generation. Waul intends to change this.
He noted that: “Over the last decade, I have grown deeply concerned about the declining state of our constituency. Each day, I witness firsthand the plight and challenges of residents for whom I provide care. Our communities are plagued with crime, lack basic infrastructure such as good roads and water supply. There are limited jobs for our young people. These issues are worsening despite the current MP being in charge for almost 18 years.”
Given the overwhelming call for more inclusive leadership in the constituency, the candidate is highly optimistic about the opportunity for victory. Since taking up chairmanship of the constituency for the People’s National Party, he has done a tremendous amount of work in building the organisation of a winning team. Waul worked closely with the late Rudyard Mears in setting the foundation for victory and has been building on the platform Mears laid while he was chairman.
Waul’s platform focuses on key issues in health, education, jobs, crime prevention and infrastructure, which are all aimed at correcting the neglect in the constituency.
“The first thing I’d like to tackle is health care. We must upgrade the only and outdated health facility in the constituency. We must also bring permanent water supply to communities without it. In collaboration with the party leadership, my team and I are developing a plan to combat crime, specifically the surge stemming from the vulnerable coastline communities,” Dr. Waul outlined. “My priority to develop this constituency means developing its people, our youth must be trained and gain the right skills for the modern workplace.”
Under the theme ‘Win With Waul’, Dr. Waul has already made strong in-roads into the hearts and minds of constituents through his detailed and strategic approach to canvassing the length and breadth of the communities and divisions within the constituency. He displays an exceptional work ethic, taking a measured and intentional approach to securing votes. The candidate pledges to work tirelessly for the right to serve.
“I am prepared to work for every single one of your votes,” he said. “I am prepared to begin the process of transforming this constituency, community by community in partnership with you, the people, to make South West St. Catherine the model constituency in Jamaica that others want to emulate.”
As Member of Parliament in waiting, his approach to leadership is one of inclusion, encapsulated in his campaign’s sub-theme ‘Waul for All’. He intends to lead a constituency after the next polls; where everyone will benefit from the projects and programmes he will implement whether or not they voted for the PNP, JLP or did not participate in the electoral process.
“As I embark on this journey, I am asking for your support as members of this noble constituency, to give me a chance to inject new blood into the constituency and to deliver real change and development for all and not a select few,” said Dr. Waul.
