Constabulary comment on May Pen tragedy involving cop
Twenty-year-old Jimoy Suckoo died under questionable circumstances after the off-duty cop’s government issued firearm was discharged while both were inside a room at the Versailles Hotel in May Pen, Clarendon on Sunday, January 12.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) – the state agency responsible for investigating deaths involving the security forces – says it is seeking to ascertain the full circumstances and actions taken which resulted in the weapon being fired.
The officer’s weapon has been seized and is said to be cooperating with the investigation.
Since the incident occurred there has been strong public criticism against the unnamed officer involved and the police force, while the family of the deceased is demanding urgent answers.
However commenting on the matter the police high command says it is treating the investigation with “utmost seriousness” and “remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability”.
The statement reads: “The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is aware of an incident that occurred on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the Versailles Hotel in May Pen, Clarendon, resulting in the death of Ms Jimoy Suckoo, a 20-year-old bartender. The incident reportedly involved a Constable who is attached to the Specialized Operations Branch.
“The matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and a thorough investigation is underway. The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has taken charge of the investigation, and the JCF is fully cooperating to ensure transparency and accountability.
“Initial reports indicate that the officer involved provided a statement outlining the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident. As the investigation progresses, the JCF remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Ms Suckoo during this difficult time. Further updates will be provided as deemed appropriate by the investigative authorities.”
