Missing fishermen: Human body parts removed from shark’s gut

Their 28-foot single engine boat was discovered Tuesday at the bottom of the ocean in the region of Pigeon Island by a search team of divers.

Hours later another set of fishermen who had set their net within the said vicinity caught a 10-foot shark. The shark along with the rest of their catch were taken to shore and after gutting the giant fish, a male hand, other human body parts and a pieces of red cloth were removed with the animal’s intestines.

The hand which is visibly intact is believed to be that of Bernard, who is said to be wearing a red t-shirt when he and Smith were last seen venturing out to sea in what would be a routine 15-25 minutes trip from Old Harbour Bay to Pigeon Island.

While the human remains have been taken to a lab for DNA analysis to determine if it is indeed Bernard, another trip to the area on Thursday rescuers coming up empty handed.

Though hope is quickly fading, there is still some amount of optimism among family and friends.

Neither men are natives of Old Harbour Bay, but have been residing in the community for more than two decades and are well known.

Colleagues of both men believed that the men encountered bad weather resulting in the engine becoming entangled with the net, causing the vessel to capsize.
