Flu vaccine now available at all health centres
The flu, an acute viral infection, is highly contagious and spreads primarily through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. It can affect anyone regardless of age, with symptoms that include fever, chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, headache, and a runny or stuffy nose.
Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor-McKenzie, chief medical officer, emphasized the importance of the flu vaccine, particularly for high-risk groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic medical conditions.
“Children and the elderly are at high-risk, and the flu is to be taken seriously, as it can lead to pneumonia and blood infections, and cause diarrhoea and seizures in children. The flu can also worsen chronic medical conditions such as heart or lung disease,” she warned.
The vaccine is being offered free of charge to high-priority groups, including healthcare workers, children and the elderly with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, individuals in state care, and non-health frontline workers.
Private healthcare providers are encouraged to procure the vaccine through private distributors to extend availability to the broader population.
Flu activity in Jamaica typically begins to rise in October and November, peaking between December and March, and can continue as late as May.
The Ministry of Health & Wellness is urging the public to get vaccinated early to help protect themselves and those around them.
Despite the ministry’s efforts encouraging persons to take the flu shot, the take-up is likely to be very minimal. During the covid-19 pandemic approximately 25% of the Jamaica population chose to be vaccinated, the majority choosing naturopathy instead.
