The announcement of the Jamaica and Bayer Leverkusen winger was made yesterday by the local governing body for special athletes.

Bailey, who is also ambassador for Food for the Poor Jamaica, said he will give of his best to help his country, especially Jamaicans in need and the most vulnerable.

“Jamaica is my home and I understand the culture and everything about it. I will always be Jamaican, and I’ll always raise that flag high. No matter what I do, I’ll always put Jamaica first and let everybody understand that Jamaica is all where it started from, and I’ll never stop fighting for my country,” said Bailey, who grew up in the tough Kingston City ghetto of Cassava Piece.

Sport Minister Olivia Grange was among the dignitaries present who applauded Bailey, 23, on his appointment.

“Leon’s success story is also one of perseverance and hard work, values that are embodied in each Special Olympic athlete,” said Grange.

Former CEO of Special Olympics Jamaica, now executive director of Special Olympics Caribbean, Lorna Bell and Digicel CEO Jabbor Kayumov also congratulated the Reggae Boy on his newest appointment.
