Body retrieved from fire at Old Harbour home
The charred remains are believed to be that of Madge Davis, who lives alone at the premises.
A DNA forensics analysis will be performed ahead of any formal conformation.
Davis, said to be about 70 years old, is a retired businesswoman who operated a shop for many years at Lincoln Plaza, Old Harbour.
A preliminary report from the police stated about 1:30 am officers were alerted to a fire at 139 Cedar Drive, Marlie Acres.
The St Catherine Fire Department, informed Old Harbour News that fire-fighters based at its Old Harbour location responded immediately after observing thick plume of smoke nearby in the night’s sky.
The observation was noted about 1:09 am, said the fire department. The Old Harbour Fire Station is based in Marlie Acres as well.
When firefighters got to the location the house was heavily engulfed in flames already.
An amateur video of the incident showed firefighters outside a house on fire, while neighbours looked on.
Following cooling down operations a body was found in the living room, a firefighter informed Old Harbour News.
The cause of the blaze is undetermined at the moment, pending the findings of an investigation which has already begun.
The tragic circumstance has left the community in shock.
Treacha Reid, president of South St Catherine Chamber of Commerce, said the business community of Old Harbour is deeply moved by the horrible death of their colleague.
“We are deeply sorry about the loss of Madge Davis,” said Reid who knew the deceased very well. “I’ll remember Madge in many positive ways… that big smile and a great sense of humor; always great with a story.”
Of Davis the Chamber President added: “She is a veteran in the Old Harbour business community she was a no-nonsense person and someone who you could rely on at all times. She was the epitome of loyalty and will be forever in our hearts. Condolences to her family on behalf of the South St Catherine Chamber of Commerce.”
