Old Harbour taxi group recognised
The initiative was borne out of the school’s cultural department spearheaded by Latanya Chambers along with principal Michelle Hines-Williams.
“We saw it fitting to award these awardees as they have been rendering their services for many years to the children within the community and especially to the Good Hope Primary and Infant family,” Chambers said.
Acting deputy superintendent Carey Duncan, sub-officer in charge of the Old Harbour police station, lauded the organisers for the kind gesture, while urging the taxi men to continue to be an example worthy of being emulated.
The occasion was a very special moment for retired taxi driver called Mr. Pinto, who was overwhelmed by the recognition for being outstanding taxi driver. Pinto’s award was not only special for him but for others.
“As young a lady this man has imparted a lot of knowledge and words of encouragement each an everyday that I and others would travel with him to and from school,” Chambers remarked in reference to Pinto.
Andrew Keize, one of the children’s favorite taxi drivers, received high praise for his work.
“One student lamented that at times his mom finds it hard to be financially stable and at times he is not sure how he will get to and from school but stated that once Mr. Keize is around he knows it is possible,” Chambers recounted from one of many conversations she’s had with other commuters.
Keize said nothing was too hard for him to do for the children. He expressed how grateful and appreciated he felt, knowing that the work they do can be thankless because “most persons never really show appreciation in this form”.
Chambers said Keize was more than just a public transporter.
She said “Mr. Keize is the one who will come on the school compound and if he sees something that needs to be fixed without a doubt he always take the time out to give his service”.
And Constantine McCarthy alias ‘Cashy’ who is known to be the “comedian” among the group of drivers, said he felt honoured, knowing that all is effort in doing his job didn’t go unnoticed.
Other drivers recognised were Floyd Miller, Lloyd Robinson, Gian Robinson, Fitzroy Wright, Ruan Love, Troy Chang, Dean Brown and Steve Williams, as well as Messrs Pencil and Sam.
