Weather experts say persons on the island of Jamaica should stay alert after the National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced this afternoon that “a broad area of low pressure” has formed southwest of the island.

The system has a low chance of developing into a major storm, stated the US-based NHC, but Jamaica is likely to experience lots of rain as early forecast is for it to move northwards over the next seven days.

“The next name on the list is Vince, so Jamaicans should stay alert,” posted meteorologist Glenroy Brown of Weather Jamaica on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the NHC: “Environmental conditions could support some slow development of this system during the next several days while it moves generally northward.”

Brian Shields in his latest update on YouTube’s Mr Weatherman, noted that as is customary this time of the year, systems forming in the Caribbean Sea more often than not will move in a northerly direction.

He explained: “So if something was to develop south of Jamaica that could lift into Jamaica or south of Haiti or the DR (Dominican Republic) that could lift to the north… so that’s usually the trend.”

Late this evening the National Meteorological Service of Jamaica issued a statement regarding the development.

It says: “As is customary for October, a broad area of low pressure has developed over the western Caribbean and is expected to impact weather conditions over Jamaica over the weekend. The system could further develop near to the island over the next few days and is being monitored.”

The National Hurricane Center will continue to monitor this system and provide updates accordingly.
