Unattended candle cause behind house fire
In an Old Harbour News follow-up with the Jamaica Fire Brigade, the investigation concluded that a lit candle was the cause of the blaze that partially destroyed a section of the four-bedroom dwelling on Mahoe Drive.
On July 6, 2024, three days after the passage of Hurricane Beryl which left most of the country without electricity and water, firefighters were called about 10:00 pm to the location by residents.
A man who was in the house when the fire started was rescued by neighbours who took quick action after the occupant was unable to find the keys to unlock the doors and exit the building.
Luckily he managed to escape the raging inferno while the swift response from the firefighters brought the situation under control within reasonable time to prevent a total destruction of the J$23 million property.
Estimated damage following the detailed report has been placed at J$12 million inclusive of structural loss and destruction of its contents.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade is again warning persons to take extra precaution to mitigate fires in homes and on lands.
