Described by her grandmother Maurene Beharrie as a “book worm”, Kleona chalked up an average of 94.4% on the national primary level external exam for a place at the prestigious Glenmuir High in Clarendon.

This determination, she revealed, is inspired by her beloved uncle, who blazed an academic trail during his youth before immigrating to the United States.

So motivated to walk in the footsteps of that influential relative, the 12-year-old chose his alma mater and has already set her sights on attending the University of the West Indies just like he did many years aback.

“I feel very proud of myself because I achieved what I have been working for because ever since when I was younger I’ve always wanted to go to Glenmuir High,” said the top-ranked girl at Old Harbour Primary.

“I got inspiration from my older uncle, his name is Oshane Beharrie,” she added. “Ever since I was younger he has been my motivator and my inspiration to do the best I can in achieving everything I ever wanted and he went to Glenmuir High and because of that I felt the inspiration from him to go forth and go to Glenmuir High as well.”

Aside from being someone who has a thirst for knowledge, Kleona works hard toward her goals, stated Ms Beharrie.

“She is a go-getter,” she said of her grand-daughter. “She’s always putting herself out in front. She always tries to be a leader for everything. Even when she passed for Glenmuir, we were elated but we were not surprised because we know she works for it and she will achieve whatever she tries to put herself into.”

She noted the “integral” role played by Kleona’s parents in her success thus far and is expecting “only the best” in high school “because she’s always trying for the best”.

“So I’m expecting the best and beyond,” she added.

As one of the most sort-after high schools in Jamaica, Kleona is at the right place to continue on her path of academic excellence. Already she has acquainted herself with the school environment in the Clarendon capital by attending its summer programme.

“I’m looking forward to it,” she said of her new school. “And I’m going there to do my utmost best no matter what comes ahead.”

At home Kleona says she has a lot of younger relatives whom she spends time socializing amongst. This has become another source of inspiration for the Burke Road resident, who hopes to one day become a specialist doctor who treats children.

“At this moment I want to become a pediatrician when I get older. I actually want to study in medicine and also I have a really close relationship with children,” she said. “I enjoy spending a lot of time with children. I have a lot of baby cousins.”

Bonds formed with teachers and friends represent the most memorable moments at Old Harbour Primary for Kleona, who said she’s looking forward with great anticipation meeting new teachers and friends in high school.
